“The Making of A Winter Amid the Ice” by Guillaume Jobst
Once the modeling is over, I can tackle the shaders and textures. The first issue was about the background mountain: how could I handle in a believable way the snow and the rock?
For this I used the 3DS Max procedural textures. The Mental ray Landscape texture was of great help on this.
I started from two shaders: one for the rock and the other for the snow (based on a procedural of noise, smoke, and splat for the specular).
Rock
Snow
Then, to switch from one to the other, a blend shader with a mask made of the famous landscape texture that generates a white and black pattern based on the inclination of the faces (compared to the normals). This allowed me to separate snow and rock quite easily.
