“The Making of A Winter Amid the Ice” by Guillaume Jobst
Close-up on the ice modeling details
Once my volumes are a little more accurate, I begin laying a first draft of lighting in order to get a more precise idea of the atmosphere. I begin laying a light that will provide the general direction of the whole lighting (here, it’s the sun). Then I fine the ambience down thanks to a global lighting (Skylight-FG type). And, here and there, I emphasize the light thanks to small omni so as to fine down the boat sails lighting or the icy peaks in the background for instance.
Now I can spend time finishing the modeling off. For instance, for the background mountain, I just used a succession of meshsmooth and noise based on a low resolution model.
To model the snowy details of the boat, I use poly. I switch to a top view and I check Ignore backfacing in the Edit poly section, so as to select only the polys that are oriented in parallel to the top view (where the snow is supposed to bank up).
Once the front selection is done, I only have to add some thickness thanks to the shell modifier and then I add a meshsmooth and a noise to give it some irregularity. I proceed similarly for all the elements that are exposed to the snowfalls: planks, cabins, ropes that maintain the sails etc.
Result on the boat:
From time to time, I also go back to the mesh point by point in order to improve the snow layout.
