I created this image to illustrate the short story written by Jules Verne when he was young: A Winter Amid the Ice . My first idea was a rather simple composition with a boat starting to be frozen by the ice, and in the background, lost in the blizzard, a small group of explorers on their way to save their fellow who went missing in this unfriendly land 🙂
I started from several visual references (see below) of historical boats and frozen landscapes. I started a simple modeling of the boat with the Max basic tools: polygons, loft and patch grid for the sails, as well as a spline network + surface modifier for the hull. Nothing complicated in fact 🙂 See the image below.
