“Dagger UV mapping ” by Gavin Watson
Under the tools options you can render the uvw to a template to use in a 2d package like photoshop
Save this image and a copy .In max open the material editor choose a new material and go to the diffuse section found under blinn basic parameters roll out select the map button and choose bitmap browse for the rendered uv template image and select it.
Then apply this material to your mesh
Now we ready to texture in an external 2d app
