8: WORKING ON THE HAIRS
As we did to create photographic skin base, we will build a base to paint the hairs.
This time we have not a 3d base so we are free to build a hair composition by picking photo pieces and placing in order to form the whole hair shape as we prefer. Perspective references are not as important as those for the face. It doesn’t matter if photos haven’t a good quality because are just a base reference for painting. When all pieces are positioned we’ll proceed with colour balance to integrate all parts in order to make them look as a single image. At this point we’ll begin to paint, picking colours from the composition just assembled ( with eye picker tool ) and using small sized brushes (brush tool). It’s advisable to start using dark colours and proceed laying upon lighter colours, in order to give visibility to the volume and deep of the hair.
Also smudge tool is useful to trace hairs and mix photo colours. It’s necessary to be patient for the care of details. When the whole hair is painted, we will end this stage by fixing general shadows and by lightening zones that we want more brightened.
9: PAINTING THE BEARD
For the painting of beard I hadn’t taken photos to use as base; I had just few low resolution images found in internet. So I choose the photo with the beard’s shape I liked more as reference and I started to paint, hair by hair, copying hair reference direction and picking colours from the long hair painted in the previous stage. Also in this step I used dark colours below and bright colours above.
10: THE CLOTH
To create the fabric I built a NURBS surface mesh model in order to have textures realistically following cloth’s creases. Afterwards I imported the 3d render in photoshop and here I added dirt, imperfections and shadows. Dirt effect is made by a photographic dirty surface image positioned in an upper layer in overlay mode.
