I begin to brainstorm by start sketch everything in my head about the briefat this point , I have 2 approach to the image, 1. realistic rendering and highdetail 3d scene and 2. the graphic abstract element , the first approach require more time and hardware power ,but the result will be easy to the audience to understand, the second approach require more thinking process about composition and element to use,the good point is , it ‘s ” graphic way” ,so it’s easy to adapted to print ad or poster for Alienware in the future use, i can’t make final decision about this 2 approach but my hardware is still old , so I went to the second approach but still use the detail element in 1 approach for this image .

Tentacle modeling: i’m not finalize the concept in more detail so , I begin to create abstract form in 3d , I found that wing3d modeller is my choice for this, the overall process is shown in the image , i start to create primitve and modified it in different way and because I don’t need more detail in model so I will pay attention to the lighting and composition

This is the most important part and take the most of time to finished this part , I start to add , remove , modified every element in the scene but , i keep my composition focus point to the middle -left and begin to add line , tentacle move straight through that point , first I lock camera for easy to place element , change the fov of camera, this cause the perspective distortion and add more depth to the compositon. .The group of rock line is done by instance model to the particle flow -paint effect use for add detail to the scene .In the last minute i add ” the city ” element to the scene to make space more wider .

There are a few shader group in my scene because the over all light in the scene a litlle bit dark , and I want to focus to the crystal model at the center of the image , the orther part should tone down not to distract audience attention.tentacle shader is the common blin shader plug with some bump , nothing fancy here , as you see in the final image the main point is crystal .the crystal shader is simple blin plug with sampler info to get the transparent fade off according to the normal to the camera some glow effect use with sphere model , it’s small point far away will give more mysterious to the image.each part render in Full resolution 2657 x 6000 is about 2-3 minutes – p4 2.6ghz, 1gbram

After render out different element , I begin to play with color ,and add more element by rough skecth to test what can I add more to improve the image . First I want to add a huge alien battle ship to the sky but I think it will make composition look wierd, at this point i’m quiet happy with the result

Final composite is done in Adobe Photoshop , all element are bring together and enhanced by adjust color , try different blending mode , screen mode , soft light mode , overlay mode are use extensively here , some paint color , blur some spot to create hand-made depth of field , the ray of crystal is done by duplicate layer , zoom blur and change blending mode , maya fluid sky are distort to fit the perspective of final Image.
