Part 1: Lineart (~ 2,5 hours)
I normally start my paintings with a lineart. This way I can envision and plan how the final image and its composition will look like. At this step I surely also use references and inspirations. I draw the different elements of the picture (Chihiro, Haku, and the moon) on separate layers and then arrange them by dragging them with the move-tool. Below are detailed steps of part 1 – lineart:
Step 1
Make a new layer above the background layer and sketch out the basic shapes of the dragon (Haku) using a small round hard airbrush (size- and opacity-jitter set to pressure sensitivity) and a dark blue.
Step 2
Refine the sketch of Haku and add first detail. Then make a new layer and sketch out the basic shapes of the girl (Chihiro), move these two elements around and try to find a balanced placement, then erase the parts of the dragon-lineart, which are behind the girl (so that they don’t overlap).
Step 3
Reduce the opacity of the two sketch-layers to about 60% and make a new layer above them, then zoom in and draw the final lineart using an even smaller hard airbrush and a dark blue, draw all the details and the moon (using the ellipse tool), keep the three elements on a different layers. Now erase the sketch-layers.
We will continue with next part 2 – Flat colors in follwoing days, stay tuned.
