“Morphing” by Gavin Watson
Hi everyoneThis tutorial is about using zbrush to make cool morph targets in 3ds max. Breathing life into your character through expressions I will assume that you have a basic understanding of the afore mentioned. Software I will include the shortcut keys that I use, through out the tutorial
Ok so let’s jump right in!

To maximise the realism of your character morphs we recommend to use high quality face expressions photo references from the #1 reference website www.3D.sk
This is a model I have been working on and was sculpted in Silo, as you can see I have included the teeth and the eyes ,the reason for this is when I sculpt the morph targets I will always be sure that the mesh does not overlap them later in animation .
Firstly we want to mask the eyes and teeth so that we don’t accidentally sculpt over them
Hold down cntrl and shift and left click the head, you will see that the eyes and the teeth have been hidden still while holding down cntrl and shift, click the background now the head is hidden and the eyes and teeth are showing. That is what we want!
Hold down cntrl and click the background to mask them.
Now they will not effected by the sculpting
Here are the steps
Now we are ready to start sculpting, so go head and do you’re your thing.
Sculpt a few different expressions and save them separately as obj files As many as you like, the most important rules here are, that all your morph.
Targets should have the same amount of vertices and remember to keep the same pivot point or else the mesh will move unwontedly
Ok then the fun part is close at hand. Open max and start importing your obj files. When importing use multiple option because you wont need the all those extra eyes and teeth, and selecting this option will allow you to delete them

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation
but I find this matter to be really something which I think I would never understand.
It seems too complex and very broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
